Ann Supports Brentford and Isleworth Carers

USDWA Carers Campaign

Ann Keen MP speaks out for carers in Brentford and Isleworth

Ann has thanked carers for their valuable contribution to society and is looking forward to more financial help being made available to them.

Though she cannot sign Early Day Motions as a Minister, Ann backs shopworker's union Usdaw's campaign for more help for carers.

Usdaw acknowledges the contribution made by over six million carers in the UK, which saves the country an estimated £87 billion per year.  It recognises the progress the Government has made in giving them the right to request flexible working and protection from discrimination.

Ann said: “The Government has done much to help carers who have to or choose to work and I am supporting the Equalities Bill, which offers equal treatment for carers.

“By 2018, carers will be supported so that they are not forced into financial hardship by their caring role.  A lot has been done but there is much still to do.”

John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary, added: “Currently Carers’ Allowance only pays £53.10 a week for a minimum of 35 hours caring, equivalent to just £1.52 per hour.  Many Usdaw members combine their caring responsibilities with work, which can be physically exhausting as well as limiting how much they can earn.

“Our joint campaigning with MPs has already delivered big benefits for working carers, with the introduction of the right to request flexible working and new legislation to stop discrimination against carers on the horizon. The next step is for the valuable work of carers to be recognised and rewarded properly”
