I was overwhelmed to be awarded an honorary Doctor of Law Degree from the University of Bedforshire. It was a truly moving moment for me.

Ann Visits Trafford General Hospital to Mark the NHS's 60th Birthday

2008 marked an important milestone in British history - the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the NHS and free healthcare to all, regardless of ability to pay.

In July 1948, Labour Secretary of State for Health and "Father of the NHS" Aneurin Bevan opened the Park Hospital in Manchester. It was the first hospital to offer free healthcare for all under the new NHS and it marked a revolution in British social history.

For the first time, patients would be treated according to their need and not the size of their bank balance - a Labour principle that stands firm today, despite years of Tory cuts under Margaret Thatcher and plans to do the same by David Cameron.

I visited the old Park Hospital - now known as Trafford General Hospital - and brought the cameras along with me....

  The Stroke Association's "Lost Without Words" Campaign

IN December 2008, I was privileged to be asked to record this video in support of the Stroke Association's "Lost Without Words" campaign. The campaign calls for communication to be recognised as a basic human right, and for those who have suffered from the effects of stroke to receive the support they need.
